Is Unlimited eSIM data worth it? Your 2026 guide

Setting up an eSIM is easy – it takes like 5 minutes. But with a dizzying array of providers, plans, and prices to consider, finding the right eSIM is easier said than done.

Specifically, many Aussies struggle to decide whether or not to get an unlimited eSIM – the answer hinges on your budget and habits. Read on to see whether unlimited is worth it for you.

UNDERSTANDING THE LIMITS OF AN UNLIMITED DATA ESIM

Contrary to the name, the unlimited eSIM does have limits. Understanding them will help you make a well-informed decision.

HOTSPOTTING LIMITS

To rein in data consumption, some eSIMs limit hotspotting, often as low as 500MB to 1GB per day (we’re looking at you, Holafly). That minuscule limit will last just 30 minutes when streaming 1080p video, or a few hours of light-to-moderate browsing.

Hotspot limits are a huge inconvenience for laptop users, especially remote workers with strict deadlines to meet.

The best eSIMs, such as ZenSim, offer unlimited free hotspotting on all plans. In my opinion, that’s non-negotiable for anyone sharing eSIM data with another device.

DAILY LIMIT CAPS

The other important limit is the daily usage cap. While there are indeed no download limits, the local network will throttle your speed, typically to 1 Mbps, once you reach your daily cap

Typical daily caps range from 2GB to 5GB. Many eSIMs hide the cap behind confusing, often ambiguous Fair Use Policies (FUPs). You won’t actually know how much data you can use before getting throttled, which is a deal-breaker for anyone relying on a full-speed connection.

Maybe I’m being finicky, but I feel companies should be forthcoming with this kind of info. That’s why ZenSim discloses its 3GB/day data cap and 1 Mbps throttle upfront.

The good news is that 1 Mbps is good enough for basic browsing, checking emails, and streaming lower-definition YouTube videos. Just don’t try downloading any massive files.

WHO SHOULD GET AN UNLIMITED DATA ESIM?

Unlimited eSIMs are a godsend for data hoggers chewing through multiple gigabytes per day. If you’re prone to doomscrolling social media, binge-watching Netflix, or taking hours-long video calls with mum, you probably want an unlimited plan.

Not only will it provide the GB you need, but you’ll also never stress about running dry. You can download all day without thinking about usage, let alone monitoring your plan or topping up data. That additional peace of mind makes unlimited data worth considering for anyone.

Unlimited is also a huge help for digital nomads hotspotting off a handheld device. With an unlimited eSIM, you can grind away all day without fretting about running out of data and missing a deadline.

But there’s a catch. If your job involves transferring large chunks of data – video editors, software engineers, data scientists, etc. – then you’ll quickly hit your daily limit cap and get throttled to 1 Mbps. Realistically, you’ll have to tap into WiFi to remain productive if you need fast transfer speeds beyond the daily cap.

That doesn’t mean the nomad shouldn’t get an unlimited eSIM. It just means they shouldn’t rely on it entirely when performing data-intensive tasks.

WHO SHOULD NOT GET AN UNLIMITED DATA ESIM?

Unlimited eSIMs can get pretty pricey, typically exceeding A$100 per month in many countries and regions. Data-capped plans, on the other hand, are much cheaper, often less than half or even a quarter of the price.

Data-capped plans make financial sense for light-to-moderate scrollers. Modest bandwidth users exercising a degree of digital restraint can easily stick to a limited data cap and save themselves a decent amount of dough.

If you browse sparingly and save heavy downloads for WiFi, you’ll probably find that 20GB per month will suffice. 20GB over 30 days is our most popular package across most regions and countries, because many customers find it aligns with their needs.

Some frugal users can get away with cheaper 10GB or maybe even 5GB data plans. However, that means restricting use to essential low-bandwidth tasks like maps and messages.

UNLIMITED VS LIMITED DATA ESIMS: COMPARING PRICES

Let’s review a real-world Europe pricing example so you can see exactly how much more unlimited data will cost you.

ZenSim Europe eSIM:

  • 10GB, 30-day: A$35 ($22 USD)
  • 20GB, 30-day: A$45 ($29 USD)
  • Unlimited, 30-day: A$89 ($57 USD)

Note that these prices are on the lower end. Despite partnering with top-tier networks and providing a slick, user-friendly product, ZenSim has one of the cheapest eSIMs for Europe

So, switching from unlimited to a 20GB plan will save you A$44 on a 30-day trip. That’s enough for a dorm bed in Amsterdam, entry into the Sagrada Família, or a boatload of beer in the Czech Republic.

HOW TO MAKE LIMITED DATA LAST LONGER

Keen to save coin with a data-capped plan? You may need to get thrifty to ensure your data lasts the distance. Here’s how to reduce data use on the road.

  • Log in to the hotel WiFi as soon as you check in.
  • Look for a local WiFi connection when killing time on your phone – restaurants, cafes, train stations, airports, etc.
  • Go easy on streaming videos (including reels) while using mobile data.
  • Switch longer videos to a lower resolution.
  • Download maps and translation tools for offline use.
  • Switch on your phone’s “Data-saver” (Android) or “Low Data Mode” (iOS).
  • Restrict app updates to WiFi only.
  • Turn off data syncing through apps like iCloud and Google Photos.
  • Turn off video auto-play on social media apps.
  • Use Lite versions of apps, such as Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite.
  • Periodically check your data usage on the ZenSim app to see how you’re tracking.

By following these data-saving best practices, most Aussie travellers find they can stay within their data limit and avoid topping up.

Of course, you could just grab an unlimited plan and skip all that.

IS HOLAFLY THE BEST UNLIMITED ESIM?

If you’ve looked into unlimited eSIMs, chances are you’ve come across Holafly. The Spanish brand has grown into a global eSIM behemoth, partly due to its gigantic affiliate program. Holafly pays affiliates, such as bloggers and TikTok influencers, a commission to “recommend” its eSIM – take all such reviews with a huge grain of salt.

The brand exclusively offers unlimited data on its single-country and region eSIMs (only the global eSIM has a data-capped plan). As a large company specialising in unlimited data packages, Holafly must offer the best unlimited eSIM, right?

Not necessarily. The well-established player has more restrictions than competitors like ZenSim.

For starters, Holafly has a strict 500MB-1GB/day hotspotting limit, making it a no-go for most TV streamers and remote workers. The brand also hides its daily usage limit behind a wall of text in its Fair Usage Policy. Basically, you won’t know how much data you can download per day at full speed – until it's too late.

Despite these glaring drawbacks, Holafly has higher prices than many of the best eSIMs in Asia, including ZenSim.

  • ZenSim: 30-day Unlimited – A$109 (US$70)
  • Holafly: 30-day Unlimited – A$117 (US$74.90)

ZenSim is an Australian-owned brand that offers unlimited hotspotting and a transparent 3GB/day cap on its unlimited plans.

HOW MUCH DOES AN UNLIMITED ESIM COST?

The cost of an unlimited plan varies by country/region and provider.

Here’s a pricing summary of popular travel destinations on a 30-day unlimited ZenSim plan, with free hotspotting and a 3GB/day cap.

DestinationPrice
ThailandA$105 (USD$63)
Indonesia (Bali)A$79 (USD$51)
New ZealandA$109 (USD$70)
USAA$89 (USD$57)

IS UNLIMITED WORTH IT? FINAL THOUGHTS

Should you go all in on unlimited? Or would you rather save a few bucks on a data-capped plan? It depends on your personal circumstances.

If you’re a power user or don’t want to bother with data rationing on holiday, an unlimited plan is probably worth the extra A$50 or so. But if you’re on a tight budget and don’t mind being digitally thrifty, a 20GB (or lower) plan will save you a pretty penny.

Whichever path you choose, rest assured that ZenSim has the perfect travel eSIM for you.
