Best eSIM for Spain Travel for Australians (2026)

Siestas, sombreros, sangria… sunny Spain is a superlative holiday destination. But with stark cultural differences and a big language barrier to overcome, it’s not the kind of country you should tackle without internet.

I remember struggling to navigate on my first trip to Spain, years before smartphones became mainstream. Relying entirely on outdated, ripped-out Lonely Planet pages, I somehow found myself hurling fruit at Tomatina and stepping foot into the Sagrada Familia.

But it wasn’t easy.  My single-phrase Spanish vocabulary (una cerveza por favor) made travelling quite tricky – everything is easier with the internet at your fingertips. Thankfully, the travel eSIM means getting online is now more convenient and affordable than ever.

To help you find the perfect data plan for your upcoming Spanish sojourn, we’re comparing the best Spain eSIMs available to Aussies in 2026.

¡Vamos!

WHAT IS AN ESIM?

Wtf is an eSIM, anyway? It’s a digitally “embedded” SIM. Instead of buying a tiny plastic card with a microchip from a shop, you download and install the eSIM onto your phone. The eSIM starts working automatically the moment you set foot in Spain.

Most Spain travel eSIMs only provide mobile data – no voice or text. But that doesn’t really matter as virtually every Spaniard, including businesses, uses WhatsApp.

Most modern smartphones support eSIMs. Check out our eSIM compatibility tool to see whether yours will.

WHY YOU SHOULD GET AN ESIM FOR YOUR TRIP TO SPAIN

The eSIM is cheaper than mobile roaming and more convenient than a local SIM.

USING GLOBAL ROAMING IN SPAIN (EXPENSIVE)

Roaming is user-friendly, but far from cheap. Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) roaming could set you back as much as A$1 per MB (A$1,000 per GB!). That’s obviously extortionate. But some people still switch it on without reading the fine print and get stung.

A handful of Aussie telcos offer “Day Rate” plans for A$5-10 per day. While that’s more reasonable, it’s still A$150-300 per month, much more than an unlimited eSIM.

GETTING A LOCAL SIM CARD IN SPAIN (HASSLE)

A local Spanish SIM is pretty cheap. But honestly, it’s a bit of a stuff around.

The easiest place to buy one is from a Spanish airport kiosk, where staff speak passable English. Everything airport-related is more expensive, though, so expect similar prices to an eSIM. The worst part? Faffing around with paperwork after a rough, 24+ hour flight from Australia – yeah mate, nah.

The cost-effective option is to buy a SIM from an inner-city convenience store. It’s better to speak some español, however, as this tedious, drawn-out process involves handing over your passport and registering the plan in your name. The whole ordeal could occupy hours of your holiday (including travel time) for a relatively modest saving.

USING AN ESIM IN SPAIN ( BEST OPTION)

The travel eSIM, on the other hand, couldn’t be easier.

You compare prices online, like you’re doing now, then purchase a plan and scan a QR code to install your eSIM in 5 minutes – no tech skills or jetlagged bilingual negotiations required. Your brand-new eSIM will automatically activate the moment you set foot on Spanish soil.

Should you require more data, you can top up on the mobile app as you go. Pricewise, a good brand like ZenSim is significantly cheaper than global roaming.

THE BEST SPAIN ESIMS FOR AUSSIE TRAVELLERS

We’re doing a comparison of some top contenders to help you find a good fit.

ZENSIM

Proudly Australian-owned and operated, ZenSim is an up-and-coming startup offering lower prices than the big multinational eSIM brands. But budget doesn’t mean bad. In Spain, ZenSim partners with two of the country’s top networks, Orange and Vodafone, to ensure great nationwide coverage and connection speeds.

Installing ZenSim takes less than 5 minutes – just scan a QR code and follow the prompts. Once activated, customers can monitor usage through a user-friendly mobile app, topping up data and days, or even adding extra countries. Transparent pricing means zero hidden fees, and ZenSim offers unlimited hotspotting on all its plans.

With responsive customer service and an industry-leading 4.9 / 5 Productreview rating, this small Aussie underdog offers better value than the big-name brands.

  • 10GB 30 days - A$22 ($15 USD)
  • 20GB 30 days - A$33 ($22 USD)
  • Unlimited 30 days – A$99 ($65 USD) – find better pricing on our Europe travel eSIM.

AIRALO

One of the world’s biggest eSIM brands, Airalo is a Singapore-founded multinational serving over 20 million customers in 201+ locations. Its installation is straightforward enough, taking about 5 minutes, and customers can top up in multiple currencies through a mobile app. Airalo exclusively uses Orange, a great network in Spain. However, coverage can be lacking in rural areas with a single-network eSIM.

Airalo offers plans for 3 / 7 / 15 / 30 days. The prices are fairly reasonable though slightly higher than ZenSim for comparable plans. One big drawback is that Airalo has an unimpressive 3.9 / 5.0 rating on Trustpilot. Most negative reviews complain about configuration issues and shoddy connections – buyer beware.

  • 10GB 30 days - A$23 ($15.50 USD)
  • 20GB 30 days - A$33.50 ($22.50 USD)
  • Unlimited 30 days – A$107.50 ($72.50 USD)

SAILY

Saily is part of Nord Security, a Lithuanian-based company that made Nord VPN. As the organisation specialises in cybersecurity, it has added a slew of security features to its travel eSIM. Users receive a built-in ad blocker, web protection, and a location spoofing tool to access geo-restricted content. A full NordVPN bundle is available for an extra fee.

Saily claims it connects to Spain’s “best networks,” but doesn’t disclose which ones. That’s a a red flag if you’re concerned about speed. While security add-ons can offer peace of mind, they’re overkill for everyday Aussie travellers and can slow download speeds. Nonetheless, Saily generally receives favourable reviews with a TrustPilot score of 4.7 / 5.

  • 10GB 30 days – A$24 ($15.99 USD)
  • 20GB 30 days - A$34.50 ($22.99 USD)
  • Unlimited 30 days – A$108 ($71.99 USD)

HOLAFLY

Holafly is a massive multinational headquartered in Dublin, the tax-attractive Irish capital. Holafly claims to be the “world’s most recommended eSIM.” While that may be true, most “recommendations” come from affiliates, such as bloggers and content creators, who receive a commission on every sale – they’re hardly impartial. Holafly has a Trustpilot rating of 4.6 / 5, suggesting plenty of people wouldn’t recommend them.

Holafly exclusively offers unlimited data plans. Prices are higher than ZenSim, though you can select the exact number of days to potentially reduce the rate. However, Holafly isn’t the most transparent brand. It doesn’t disclose its partner network(s) in Spain, and has a sneaky hotspotting limit (usually 500MB or 1GB) hidden deep within its T&Cs.

The brand also buries its daily cap within a Fair Use Policy. You never actually know how much data you can use before being throttled – not ideal.

  • Unlimited 30 days – A$117 ($74.90 USD)

JETPAC

Jetpac is a well-established Singaporean eSIM brand with a strong presence on Australian social media. The sticker prices are significantly higher than many competitors, though Jetpac offers daily sales  to attract bargain-hunters.

On large plans (3GB+) Jetpac offers data-free access to WhatsApp chat, Uber, and Google Maps, even after your data runs out. Although it claims to be a multi-network service, Jetpac only partners with Orange on its Spain travel eSIM plans. The brand generally receives good feedback with a Trustpilot score of 4.7/5. Complaints relate to complicated installations and lacklustre support.

  • 10GB 30 days - A$31.50 ($20 USD)
  • 20GB 30 days - A$47.50 ($30 USD)
  • Unlimited 30 days – A$104 ($65.99 USD) – includes 55% discount

WHAT ABOUT A EUROPE SIM?

Keen for a sneaky Italian side trip or a stopover in the UK? You’re much better off getting a Europe travel eSIM than purchasing multiple plans. As one of the best eSIMs in Europe, ZenSim offers the same great benefits and cover 39 countries in one SIM.

Due to some inexplicable contractual intricacies, our Europe 30-day unlimited eSIM works out cheaper than the same plan for Spain. If you’re after unlimited data, you might as well get the Europe eSIM instead.

Just don’t tell the boss I told you this. I don’t think it’s supposed to be public knowledge.

  • 10GB 30 days - A$35 ($23 USD)
  • 20GB 30 days - A$45 ($29 USD)
  • Unlimited 30 days – A$89 ($57 USD)
