What to do with my Travel eSIM while I'm overseas?

Landed overseas or about to leave? Here's how to keep your travel eSIM running smoothly and dodge charges from your normal provider.

How can I reduce the risk of roaming charges?

Before travelling, check that:

ZenSim is selected for mobile data.
Data roaming is enabled only for ZenSim.
Data roaming is disabled for your primary SIM.
Mobile data switching is turned off.
Your primary provider's roaming packs are disabled if not required.
You understand the cost of calls, SMS, MMS, and voicemail.
Your phone's SIM labels clearly identify each service.

Can apps accidentally use my primary SIM?

If ZenSim is selected as your mobile data line and mobile data switching is disabled, apps should use the ZenSim connection.

However, phone settings vary, so check your active data line after arriving overseas.

What happens if the ZenSim eSIM has no signal?

Your phone may show no mobile data until the ZenSim eSIM connects to a supported network.

If automatic data switching is enabled, the phone may attempt to use your primary SIM instead. This is why we recommend disabling mobile data switching before travelling.

Should I use airplane mode to avoid roaming charges?

Airplane mode disables all mobile connections, including the ZenSim eSIM.

You can use airplane mode with Wi-Fi, but you will need to turn airplane mode off to use your ZenSim mobile data. Correct Dual SIM settings are generally more suitable when you need mobile data while travelling.

Recommended Travel Setup

For most travellers using a ZenSim travel eSIM alongside their normal Australian service, the recommended setup is:

Mobile data: ZenSim
Data roaming on ZenSim: On
Data roaming on primary SIM: Off
Mobile data switching: Off
Default voice line: Primary SIM
Default messaging line: Primary SIM

This setup allows you to use ZenSim for travel data while keeping your normal number active. Charges from your normal mobile provider may still apply for calls, messages, voicemail, and other roaming services.
